Visit the 37th iteration of the Waverley Art Prize, a prize awarding painting and drawing.

Waverley Council is proud to announce that Carolyn Craig has won the 37th annual Waverley Art Prize for her compelling mixed media work RE/Mediation, My mother’s broom. Craig won the $15,000 Open Prize for her work exploring domestic labour and relationships.

Speaking at the official awards presentation on Friday 30th June 2023 in Bondi Pavilion Gallery, Judges Katrina Cashman, Curator and Gallery Manager, National Art School, and Peter Sharp, Artist and Head of Drawing at UNSW’s Arts, Design and Architecture, described  Ms Craig’s artwork as “a unique combination and mix of traditional techniques and digital imagery [that] brings a poetic and transformative quality”.

The Waverley Art Prize celebrates excellence across the local arts community and greater Australian contemporary Visual Arts sector and is presented in partnership with the Waverley Woollahra Art School, the longest running artist-run initiative in Waverley.

Highly Commended: Sarah Edmondson, Certainly; Janis Clarke, Seeing You.


Mayor’s Prize ($2,000):
Damian Dillon, Bloodflowers.

Mayoral Highly Commended: Carol Archer, Thicket.


Local Prize ($1,500):
Onrie Radovic, Calibration 20.

The Waverley Art Prize is presented by Waverley Council in partnership with the Waverley Woollahra Art School, a much-loved Bondi institution providing quality arts education for children and adults. The Waverley Art Prize has been running since 1986 as a painting and drawing prize. This year the Waverley Art Prize is returning to the Bondi Pavilion Gallery as Bondi’s staple event in the local and national art prize calendar. Aimed for early to mid-career artists, this year is the 37th anniversary of the Waverley Art Prize.
